Letter to NYTimes: Democracy is Worse Than Dysfunctional, It's a Myth

Calling democracy dysfunctional understates the case ("All the Pretty Words," 8/2/04). In America today, democracy is a myth. Consider free speech zones, "safe" Congressional seats in gerrymandered districts, secret budgets, and worst of all, the utter charade of elections which leave us no BASIS for confidence in the legitimacy of their outcome. The Consent of the Governed is being denied, ignored and otherwise deemed irrelevant. These are choice words used by some important ancestors of ours. Your sense of the severity of our situation is accurate but your pretty words are not doing it justice.
